Voting Question: Can someone explain how website hosting works?

I don't understand how it works. I was just reading this, Which is about the kid who created chatroullete http://bits.blogs.nytimes.com/2010/02/13/chatroulettes-founder-17-introduces-himself/ Here is a quote from the link so you don't have to read all of it, "Right now Chatroulette uses seven high-end servers all located in Frankfurt, Germany. Network throughput is 7 gigabits a second. Bandwidth bills show sums which shock me as a teenager, but I am not very worried." Ok I see that you can buy website hosting with unlimited everything for about $10 a month and even cheaper some places. So I don't understand how it could cost very much at all when u can get unlimited bandwidth and everything very cheap?
